Off My Nut

Once the cannula is in, we begin with the Anaesthetist giving you the equivalent of a few cocktails. Pain relief meds that make your head swim before we start the sleepy medicine (penguin milk, as one anaesthetist called it). This medicine feels cold as it goes up your arm and can sometimes give you a funny taste in the back of your mouth.

One patient, upon receiving the initial cocktail and started to drift off, turns to us with the waggle of a finger and says "Man, I feel /well/ off my nut!" before laughing the freest, most joyous laugh I have ever heard. "Courtesy of the NHS" the anaesthetist responds, and the patient drifts off to sleep with a smile.
