Hi.
Please call me Mouse. This blog is about work and as you may have guessed, I work in the operating department. Some of my stories are funny, some are sad and some are just plain gross.
I guess this is mainly a way for me to keep a record of meaningful experiences so they don't get forgotten with time.
I try to keep things anonymous (because I'm AnonyMouse, get it?!) so all my patients are called Zed regardless of age or gender.
My patients are important to me. They change me as an individual as well as my perception of the world as a whole. I hope that you can draw humour and joy out of my stories and see that in all areas of healthcare, it is vitally important that we remember that patients and healthcare professionals are people above all else.
My role is an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP for short) which is like being a culmination of a scrub nurse, anaesthetic nurse, recovery nurse, hand holder, bubble blower, paperwork guru, patient advocate, barista for doctors, equipment technician, parent liaison, and emergency responder all in one. If you've had an operation in England, you've probably been looked after by an ODP along your journey and not known it. We are part of the invisible workforce that keeps you safe during those most scary surgical moments. If you have spoken to us, you probably assumed we're a nurse, and we probably let you, as explaining otherwise would take too much time.
So enjoy my blog!
I hope it brings you joy.
